Last Sunday before Christmas, Nico, my adorable godson, had this bright idea to visit a Christmas market by train. Now, let me tell you why it's cheaper for me to fly to London or anywhere else in Europe with low-cost airlines than taking the train anywhere in my beloved Lowlands. Public transport in the Netherlands is crazy expensive! You basically need to wait for deals from supermarkets or drugstores to get a decent price.

But, lucky for us, I managed to snag three tickets for unlimited travel in one day! So, with excitement in the air, we decided to hop on a train and head to Maastricht. Perfect way to soak in the Christmas spirit!

Maastricht is the southernmost city in the Lowlands, situated on the beautiful river Maas, just a short walk away from Belgium and a quick bike ride to Germany. It proudly claims to be the oldest city in the Netherlands, and let me tell you, it definitely lives up to that reputation.

We wandered through its magnificent streets, where history is everywhere – from the stunning old houses to the beautiful cathedrals. The cobblestone streets of the town centre create such a magical atmosphere, and it's the perfect place to lose track of time while soaking in the culture. It's like stepping back in time, but with modern-day charm

Maastricht is about a 45-minute train ride from Eindhoven, and usually, the weather there is much nicer. But, of course, not today!

But hey, it’s Christmas time, and it’s all about spending quality moments with the ones you love. A little rain wasn’t going to put a damper on our fun. We were determined to make the most of it, soaking in the holiday magic, no matter the weather!"

The first thing we did when we arrived was dive into some yummy poffertjes – those little fluffy Dutch pancakes! They’re a must-try. I absolutely love them with just plain sugar and butter, keeping it simple yet so tasty. It's the perfect treat to warm you up on a rainy day while wandering the charming streets of Maastricht!...

Reibekuchen , German pancake contains potato, flour and egg.. sometimes they added mature cheese but i love it like it is , i eat them with apple sauce.

And of course, Krakaur and curry wurst, the famous German’s sausages on barby... so tasty.

As the rain started to pour harder and the sky grew darker, we decided it was time to call it a day. We headed back to the train station, ready to go home.

Despite the gloomy weather, we still had an awesome time and made the most of our Sunday arvo.. Sometimes, it’s not about the weather, but the memories you make – and this was definitely a day to remember

Maastricht, Dec 22nd.
